Theodore Payne

We have many great Gardens. The most spectacular are the Huntington Gardens which are open once a month to the public for free but you must book it in advance.

The easiest to access is the Rose Garden and of course there are numerous garden walks.

This garden was selected because it is all Native and few people know about it.

The garden or wild flower hill is in the back of the plant nursery of the Theodore Payne Foundation.

The foundation promotes the planting of native plants throughout the region. They have classes and workshops on native plant care and of course sell a wide variety of plants and seeds.

The Wildflower Hotline

(818) 768-3533

The free recording tells you what flowers are blooming in Southen California and where they are blooming.

We use it every year to tell us when the poppies are in bloom.

To the rear of the property is a trail which climbs one side of the canyon the foundation occupies.

Their little valley the nursery is in has only native plants and trees.

This of course was the worst time of year to go because everything is dormant. It looks dead but actually these plants are sort of hibernating until they get more water.

To give you an idea  of what it looks like in bloom I included a few pics at the end from their website which you can use even now to find wild flowers in blooom: http://www.theodorepayne.org/
